Hepatitis B (HBV)

Hepatitis B is transmitted through blood and bodily fluids and can cause chronic liver infection, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. An effective vaccine has been available since 1982. This calculator estimates whether you have ever been infected based on core antibody status.

  • Key factors: birthplace, race/ethnicity, age
  • Trained on NHANES 2005-2016 (~44,500 participants)
  • AUC = 0.860

Hepatitis C (HCV)

Hepatitis C is a blood-borne infection that can cause chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. Many people are unaware of their infection because symptoms may not appear for decades. Modern treatments can cure HCV in over 95% of cases.

  • Key factors: injection drug use, birth year (1945-1965)
  • Trained on NHANES 2005-2016 (~44,000 participants)
  • AUC = 0.873

What's the difference? Hepatitis B and C are both liver infections but differ in transmission, prevention, and treatment:

  • Transmission: HBV spreads through blood, sexual contact, and mother-to-child. HCV spreads primarily through blood-to-blood contact, especially shared needles.
  • Prevention: HBV has an effective vaccine. There is no vaccine for HCV.
  • Treatment: Chronic HBV can be managed but rarely cured. HCV can be cured in over 95% of cases with direct-acting antiviral medications.
  • Prevalence: About 5.4% of US adults have been exposed to HBV; about 1.5% to HCV.
