HerpesChance content is created and maintained by Mark Sanborn, PhD, a biomedical researcher with expertise in bioinformatics, genomics, and statistical modeling. Dr. Sanborn has published peer-reviewed research in computational biology and has extensive experience working with large-scale biomedical datasets including NHANES.
Each article and calculator explanation follows a structured process: (1) topic identification based on user needs, search trends, or new research; (2) primary source research using peer-reviewed literature and government health databases; (3) drafting with emphasis on accuracy, clarity, and actionable context; (4) internal review against primary sources before publication.
We prioritize sources in the following order: (1) peer-reviewed research published in indexed journals; (2) US government health agencies (CDC, NIH, FDA); (3) international health organizations (WHO); (4) recognized professional medical associations and sexual-health organizations. We avoid relying on press releases, social media, or unverified claims.
Statistical claims and prevalence figures are verified against primary data sources, primarily CDC NHANES datasets. When we cite prevalence rates, sample sizes, or model performance metrics, these are derived directly from our own analyses of public data or from peer-reviewed publications. Claims about disease biology, transmission, or treatment are cross-referenced with CDC and WHO guidelines.
Content is reviewed at least annually or when significant new data becomes available (such as new NHANES survey cycles or updated CDC guidelines). Calculator models are retrained when new survey data is released. Each page displays a "last reviewed" or "last updated" date so readers know how current the information is.
